What is the Emerald Ash Borer and why are my trees at risk?

The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle native to Asia that specifically targets ash trees. Discovered in North America in the early 2000s, it has since spread across much of the United States and Canada. The larvae of the EAB feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. This feeding ultimately leads to tree decline, dieback, and, eventually, death within a few years of infestation. As a result, the emerald ash borer poses a significant threat to ash tree populations and can have severe ecological and economic impacts on forests and urban landscapes. Efforts to manage and control the spread of EAB include monitoring, insecticide treatments, and removal of infested trees.

Our Treatmeant Option: TreeAzin

TreeAzin is a systemic insecticide used for the treatment of trees infested with the emerald ash borer (EAB) and other wood-boring insects. Derived from the bark of the neem tree, TreeAzin is environmentally friendly and targets pests while minimizing harm to beneficial insects and the surrounding ecosystem.

How TreeAzin Works:

  1. Systemic Action: When applied, TreeAzin is absorbed by the tree and transported throughout its vascular system. This means that the active ingredient reaches the areas where pests feed, making it effective against insects like the EAB.
  2. Effective Against Larvae: TreeAzin specifically targets the larvae of wood-boring insects, disrupting their feeding and growth. This helps to prevent further damage to the tree.
  3. Application Methods: The treatment can be administered through trunk injections or soil drenching, depending on the specific needs of the tree and the extent of infestation.

Benefits of TreeAzin:

  • Environmental Safety: Being a botanical pesticide, TreeAzin is considered safer for non-target organisms, making it a preferable choice for urban and natural environments.
  • Efficacy: It has been shown to effectively protect ash trees from EAB infestations when applied correctly and at the right time.
  • Long-Lasting Protection: TreeAzin provides protection for an extended period, often up to two years, depending on the application method and environmental conditions.

Considerations:

  • Timing: For optimal results, TreeAzin should be applied during the tree’s growing season, ideally before the pests become active.
  • Professional Application: It’s recommended to have a certified arborist apply TreeAzin to ensure proper dosage and method.

Overall, TreeAzin is a valuable treatment option for protecting ash trees from the devastating effects of the emerald ash borer and other wood-boring insects, contributing to the conservation of tree health in affected areas.

How To Identify An Ash Tree, Do I have Any?

  • ash tree branches

    Branch Arrangement

Opposite branch arrangement, meaning branches are directly across from each other, not staggered.

  • ash tree leaf

    Leaves

Leaves are compound and consist of 5-11 leaflets. Leaflet margins may be smooth or toothed.

  • ash tree bark

    Bark

On mature trees bark is right and has a distinct pattern of diamond-shaped ridges. On young trees bark is relatively smooth.

  • ash tree seeds

    Seeds

When present on the tree, seeds are paddle-shaped, they occur in clusters and generally remain in the tree until late fall.
